A frame is allowed to do some of the work
The heritage /framed-shower-screen/ path stays. Framed screens are not a downgrade. They are a different 8.4.6 row and a different water story.
At a glance
The useful facts before the deep dive
Framed shower screens absorbed a lot of snobbery in the last twenty years. The old catalogue treated them as the entry model. This page treats them as a structure. Housing Provisions 8.4.6 has a framed-panel path for a reason. A grid can carry glass, hide an arris, and give a renovator a straight line to silicone on a wall that will never be plumb.
This is not a product sheet. There is no finish chart. There is a set of questions that stop a framed screen from being specified as an afterthought.
What the frame is doing
The frame is a moisture and structure device. It holds the pane, receives the seal, and often includes a drip or a threshold. It can be a full grid or a three-sided channel with a header. Colour is the least important sentence. Alignment is the most important. A frame that is racked to a banana wall will leak even if the glass is Grade A.
Ask what alloy and coating the frame uses if the bathroom is coastal or full of pool chemicals. We will not name a preferred powder coat. We will say corrosion is a cost factor.
The Code sentence that applies
8.4.6(a) says framed panels in the listed wet rooms, where the lowest sight line is less than 2.0 m, must be glazed with Grade A safety glazing material in accordance with Table 8.4.2. Table 8.4.2 is public on the ABCB page. It pairs types and thicknesses with maximum areas. A framed door that grows past the area for its thickness is not “a bit over”. It is the next row, or a different glass.
Do not borrow the 10 mm unframed-door rule from 8.4.2. That rule is for unframed doors other than shower screens and bath enclosures. A framed shower door is not that sentence.
8.4.8 still wants a mark: test standard, manufacturer or supplier, grade, thickness, type. A frame does not hide the need for a mark. It may hide the mark in a corner — look before the silicone skins.
Where framed screens earn their keep
Out-of-square alcoves. Rentals that will see a parade of suitcases. Bathrooms where someone wants a towel rail on the frame. Openings where a frameless channel would advertise every gap. None of those are moral failures. They are briefs.
A framed screen can still be a bad screen: tiny panes in a fussy grid, a slider that hops off a cheap track, a pivot that drops. Hardware is specified, not inherited from the cheapest crate. See accessories.
Water, trays and the bottom rail
The bottom rail is where framed screens live or die. Ask whether the tray upstand is high enough, whether the rail weeps, and whether a hob is part of the design. A frameless door can hide a lot of sins with a good channel; a framed door announces them.
Silicone colour is not a specification. Joint design is. Internal wet seals versus external fillets belong on the drawing. So does who cleans the inside of the frame six years later.
Glass that sits in a frame
Clear, frosted, decorative, low-iron — the frame does not care, the owner does. Low-iron in a small framed pane is a taste decision. Frosted in a street-facing window-shower is a privacy decision. Neither moves you out of Table 8.4.2 by itself.
If any edge is truly exposed — a headerless door, a cut-out, a glass-to-glass joint that the frame does not capture — you may have wandered into 8.4.6(b) and Table 8.4.6. Say so out loud. Hybrid screens should be specified as hybrids.
Measuring a framed opening
Measure width at three heights. Measure height at both sides. Write the out-of-square. Decide which wall you will call square. Ask whether the frame is face-fixed or recessed. Ask about tiling thickness if the tiles are not yet on. Toughened inserts are cut before tempering; a 6 mm tile surprise is a new pane.
Common mix-ups on framed shower screens
- Calling a headerless door “framed” because the inlines have metal.
- Using a furniture-glass thickness because the pane looks small in a photo.
- Skipping the 8.4.8 mark because “it is behind a frame”.
- Assuming a framed screen cannot be a sliding screen — it can. See sliding.
None of those mix-ups are solved by a nicer render. They are solved by naming a clause.
Questions to put on the drawing
- Table 8.4.2 row and pane area.
- Bottom-rail and tray detail.
- What happens at 8 mm out-of-plumb.
- Finish and corrosion class for the metal.
If the practitioner cannot answer those in writing, you do not yet have a specification for framed shower screens. You have a conversation.

The shower hub is the map. Screen types is the family tree. This page is the framed branch, kept on the URL the archive already had.
This URL is on purpose. The archive already taught people to look here. The sentences are new. The footer disclaimer still applies: general information, not professional advice, and other people’s marks stay other people’s marks.
Reading order for Framed shower screens (1)
Read the matching hub first if you arrived here cold. Then read this page for the noun in the URL. Then open safety standards and keep it beside the drawing. Then write the clause on the request for quote. Then let a licensed practitioner correct you. That loop is the method of this rebuild, and it is the only way Framed shower screens stays honest.
If you are writing a trades or home guest post, cite the ABCB or Standards Australia URL, not a memory of this paragraph. If you are a homeowner, do not treat this extra section as a certificate. It exists so the heritage path is a real guide rather than a stub. The facts still live in 8.4, 11.3 and B1D4.

Questions homeowners ask
What visitors always ask
Each answer starts with the point, then the useful detail.
Are framed shower screens still used in Australian homes?
Yes. A frame is a legitimate way to support glass, hide edges and run silicone. The NCC does not rank framed screens below frameless ones.
What glass does a framed shower screen need?
Where 8.4.6 applies, framed panels must be Grade A safety glazing in accordance with Table 8.4.2. Area and thickness still have to match the row.
Does a frame remove the need to mark safety glass?
No. 8.4.8 still requires a permanent etch or a non-reusable label on safety glazing.
