Hardware is part of the glass specification
The heritage /accessories/ path stays. This is a question list for hinges, sliders, seals and channels — not a cart.
At a glance
The useful facts before the deep dive
Accessories is a dangerous word. It sounds optional. On a frameless door a hinge is not optional. On a slider a roller is not optional. On any screen a seal is not a nice-to-have if you care about the floor.
This page replaces a 2019 parts list. We do not name a preferred brand. 301s to shower screens because a brand URL is the wrong object for this desk.
Hinges and pivots
Ask: wall, glass-to-glass, or pivot. Ask the opening angle. Ask the weight rating against the actual pane, not a catalogue average we will not invent. Ask what the hinge fixes into — a noggin, a solid reveal, or hope. Ask whether the hinge is the adjustment method for an out-of-plumb wall.
A hinge that stains in a coastal bathroom is a cost factor and a warranty question. We still will not pick a finish for you.
Sliding gear
Ask: top-hung or bottom-rolling. Ask how the pane is captured if a roller fails. Ask how you replace a roller without a new door. Ask whether the track is the header of a semi-frameless frame or a channel on a tile.
Channels, clamps and standoffs
Channels hide edges and catch water. Clamps advertise edges and demand a hole. Standoffs are a different job (mirrors, fins, sometimes barriers) and a different load path. Do not order standoffs because they looked good on a café shopfront.
For barriers, hardware is a 1170.1 conversation. See balustrades. Do not specify deck spigots from a shower-hinge brochure.
Seals, sweeps and deflectors
These are consumables. Write that down. A specification that has no sentence about replacement seals will become a complaint. Ask about the closing edge on sliders and hinged doors. Ask about a drip on a frameless door that otherwise throws water to the hinge side.
Coatings and films
Easy-clean coatings are maintenance products. Privacy films are appearance products. Neither is automatically Grade A safety glazing. If someone offers a film as the entire 8.4 strategy, ask which table row they claim and how 8.4.8 identification will work.
What not to put in the cart
Do not buy hinges before the pane weight exists. Do not buy a channel before the tile thickness exists. Do not buy a “universal” seal pack and call it a specification. Take this list to the person who will stand in the bathroom.
Common mix-ups on glass hardware and accessories
- Buying hardware first and making the glass fit the holes.
- Using a shower hinge on a house door that 8.4.2 wants at 10 mm unframed.
- Treating a coating as a safety rating.
None of those mix-ups are solved by a nicer render. They are solved by naming a clause.
Questions to put on the drawing
- Fixing substrate behind every hinge and channel.
- Weight rating versus the actual make-up.
- Seal replacement path.
- Corrosion environment.
If the practitioner cannot answer those in writing, you do not yet have a specification for glass hardware and accessories. You have a conversation.
Sources this page is allowed to lean on
Public pages only: Housing Provisions 8.4, Housing Provisions 11.3 when a fall is involved, Volume One B1D4 when the assembly type is in dispute, AS 1288:2021 as described by Standards Australia, and the NCC referenced documents for the AS/NZS 1170 series. We do not invent a thickness for a “normal” house.
The old catalogue used this URL to upsell. It now exists to stop hardware being an afterthought.
This URL is on purpose. The archive already taught people to look here. The sentences are new. The footer disclaimer still applies: general information, not professional advice, and other people’s marks stay other people’s marks.
Reading order for Shower and glass accessories (1)
Read the matching hub first if you arrived here cold. Then read this page for the noun in the URL. Then open safety standards and keep it beside the drawing. Then write the clause on the request for quote. Then let a licensed practitioner correct you. That loop is the method of this rebuild, and it is the only way Shower and glass accessories stays honest.
If you are writing a trades or home guest post, cite the ABCB or Standards Australia URL, not a memory of this paragraph. If you are a homeowner, do not treat this extra section as a certificate. It exists so the heritage path is a real guide rather than a stub. The facts still live in 8.4, 11.3 and B1D4.

Questions homeowners ask
What visitors always ask
Each answer starts with the point, then the useful detail.
What accessories does a custom shower screen need?
Whatever actually supports the pane and manages water: hinges or a slider, channels or clamps, seals, and sometimes a deflector. The list follows the screen type, not a bundle name.
Do you sell shower hardware?
No. This is an editorial list of what to ask a licensed glazier. The old brand-specific URL 301s to the shower hub.
