Privacy glass changes what you see, not which table you are in
The messy /Frosted path 301s here. /frosted/ is the real guide. Acid-etch, blast, film and decorative interlayers are not a substitute for Housing Provisions 8.4.

Frosted glass is how bathrooms stay polite. It is also how people talk themselves into thinking a pane is “safety glass because you cannot see through it”. Opacity is not a grade. 8.4 does not award marks for blur.

Ways of making glass less transparent
Acid-etch and sandblast change the surface. Patterns can be all-over or in bands (useful when you also need 8.4.7 visibility — a decorative band is not automatically the 20 mm opaque mark, but it can be designed to help). Decorative interlayers sit inside laminated glass. Films sit on the face. Liquid frost paints sit on the face and age like paint.
Ask which of those you are buying. They fail differently. A film that peels in a shower is a maintenance item. An etch that collects soap is a cleaning item. A laminated decorative interlayer in a shower should be read against the 8.4.6 explanatory note on thermal shock for laminated and organic-coated products.
Showers
A frosted framed pane is still Table 8.4.2. A frosted exposed-edge door is still Table 8.4.6. The frost does not shrink the area. It may hide water spots. It will not hide a missing mark under 8.4.8 — look at the corner.
Doors and side panels
A frosted front door can still be mistaken for an opening if the frost is pale and the hall is bright. 8.4.4 and 8.4.7 still exist. Internal wall-to-wall doors use frost as a room divider. They still pick up the unframed 10 mm rule when they are unframed doors other than shower or bath enclosures.
Windows
External frosted windows are often still an AS 2047 assembly. The frost is a glass make-up inside a tested system, or a film that may void a warranty — ask. One-off site-glazed privacy panes are an AS 1288 selection. Either way, wind and human impact are not optional because the neighbour cannot see in.
Bathrooms that also need a view band
A common honest design is frost to shoulder height and a clear head. Specify the boundary. Specify whether the boundary is a line in an etch or a silicone joint between two panes. Two panes means two marks and two edges.
Privacy is a kindness. It is not a certificate.
Common mix-ups on frosted and privacy glass
- Treating opaque as Grade A.
- Filming annealed bathroom glass and calling 8.4.6 done.
- Forgetting 8.4.7 because the pane is already decorative.
None of those mix-ups are solved by a nicer render. They are solved by naming a clause.
Questions to put on the drawing
- Which process produces the frost.
- Whether the pane is laminated, toughened or filmed annealed.
- How the pane is marked.
- How it will be cleaned in a shower.
If the practitioner cannot answer those in writing, you do not yet have a specification for frosted and privacy glass. You have a conversation.

Does frosted glass meet safety-glass rules by itself?
No. Frosting is an appearance and privacy treatment. The pane still has to be the right type and thickness for its location under Housing Provisions 8.4 and, where B1D4 sends it, AS 1288 or AS 2047.
Can I frost a pane after it is toughened?
Some surface treatments can be applied after, some cannot. Ask the fabricator. Do not assume a film from a hardware aisle is Grade A safety glazing.
