Very clear aqua-white glass planes suggesting low-iron substrate

In-depth guide

Low-iron glass is a colour decision

The heritage /starphire/ path stays. The product name is someone else’s mark. The useful fact is that low-iron float reduces the green edge of ordinary glass.

At a glance

The useful facts before the deep dive

What it changesTint and edge colour
What it does notThe NCC table
Name on this URLA trademark, not our stock

Ordinary soda-lime float is slightly green because of iron in the melt. You notice it on a white splashback, a thick door edge, or a stack of samples. Low-iron glass is melted to reduce that tint. That is the whole physical idea.

The old site used as a product pitch. Starphire in that era was a brand word. This rebuild keeps the path and treats the word as a trademark belonging to someone else. We do not claim the melt. We do not rank brands. We talk about the category.

Where the tint shows up

Splashbacks in white, blush or pale grey. Mirrors with a bright silver. Thick frameless doors. Glass fins. A low-iron pane will not make a bad paint system look expensive. It will make a good pale colour look closer to the sample.

Dark colours hide the green. If the splashback is navy, you may be paying for a difference you cannot see. That is a taste and cost factor, not a rule.

What does not change

8.4.6 does not have a low-iron row. Adhesion, benches, exposed edges and Grade A tables are the same. AS 1288 is still the selection and installation standard the NCC calls up for the assemblies in B1D4. Wind and impact do not get gentler because the edge is blue-white instead of green.

Holes, cut-outs and tempering still happen before or according to the process the fabricator names. Low-iron is a batch, not a licence to recut toughened glass.

Specifying without a brand fight

Write “low-iron float” or “extra-clear” and then the process (toughened, laminated) and the thickness. If a practitioner wants to nominate a melt, they can. You do not have to keep this URL’s historic noun in the purchase order. If you do use a product name, use it as a product name, not as this site’s stock.

Ask to see an edge sample of ordinary versus low-iron in the actual thickness. Photos lie. Edges do not.

Coatings and paint on low-iron

Painted splashbacks on low-iron show the paint, including its defects. Low-e or easy-clean coatings have their own optical effects. Specify one change at a time if you are trying to judge colour. Then specify them together if the job needs both.

The URL is a fossil. The colour science is not.

Common mix-ups on low-iron glass

  • Thinking low-iron is safer.
  • Ordering low-iron after the paint sample was approved on green float.
  • Using a trademark as if this editorial site were a distributor.

None of those mix-ups are solved by a nicer render. They are solved by naming a clause.

Questions to put on the drawing

  • Ordinary versus low-iron edge samples at the real thickness.
  • Process and thickness after the substrate is chosen.
  • Whether the colour is pale enough for anyone to notice.

If the practitioner cannot answer those in writing, you do not yet have a specification for low-iron glass. You have a conversation.

Sources this page is allowed to lean on

Public pages only: Housing Provisions 8.4, Housing Provisions 11.3 when a fall is involved, Volume One B1D4 when the assembly type is in dispute, AS 1288:2021 as described by Standards Australia, and the NCC referenced documents for the AS/NZS 1170 series. We do not invent a thickness for a “normal” house.

The splashback choices guide is the longer kitchen argument.

This URL is on purpose. The archive already taught people to look here. The sentences are new. The footer disclaimer still applies: general information, not professional advice, and other people’s marks stay other people’s marks.

Reading order for Low-iron glass (1)

Read the matching hub first if you arrived here cold. Then read this page for the noun in the URL. Then open safety standards and keep it beside the drawing. Then write the clause on the request for quote. Then let a licensed practitioner correct you. That loop is the method of this rebuild, and it is the only way Low-iron glass stays honest.

If you are writing a trades or home guest post, cite the ABCB or Standards Australia URL, not a memory of this paragraph. If you are a homeowner, do not treat this extra section as a certificate. It exists so the heritage path is a real guide rather than a stub. The facts still live in 8.4, 11.3 and B1D4.

Questions homeowners ask

What visitors always ask

Each answer starts with the point, then the useful detail.

What does low-iron glass change?

It reduces the green tint of ordinary float, so pale colours and thick edges read clearer. It does not by itself change Housing Provisions 8.4 or AS 1288 eligibility.

Is Starphire the same as all low-iron glass?

Starphire is a product name owned by someone else. This site uses the URL because it is a clean heritage path, then talks about low-iron glass as a category. We do not sell it.
